Colombia Geodiversa

Geodiversity Colombia, wants to share in this blog all the colors of nature and compatible with the world. How do today's weather forecast through the shifting of the wind? Let's start with a riddle: flying without wings, without a mouth whistle, hand strikes and you do not see it or touch it. Nothing? Let's try another: What thing is, it gives you in the face and you do not see it? The latest: broken and has no hands, no feet running and blows and has no mouth, what do you think it is?The wind! Sure, it's so commonplace that not even notice it ... but what is the wind? Where does and where it goes? Would you like to know more about it? The activity that we do is for the curious like you, are some of the answers they seek, but as always something new comes to research, we suggest you keep exploring and setting forth new questions.

THE world's most poisonous FROGS ARE IN COLOMBIA

These frogs received their common name from the numerous types of poisonous alkaloids found in the skin of many species. Most members of this family have on your skin these chemical defenses. The pumiliotoxinas are a family of about 80 alkaloids, soluble, they get it from the diet, mostly of arthropods, ie that these toxins are not synthesized by the frogs (Saporito et al. 2004, Smith and Jones 2004). The poison dart frog is the golden frog (Phyllobates terribilis).

These frogs are characterized by their skin popularly brightly colored pink bicolor and small size. The range of colors ranging from bright orange to yellow and blue black and red. However, members of the genus richest in species, Colostethus, are generally brown. Frogs of a size ranging from 1 to 6 cm in length, depending on the age and species of frog.

An expedition to find a toad decades that there is no record allowed the researchers found three previously unknown frogs in a mountainous area of northwestern Colombia.

A group of scientists announced Thursday the discovery in Colombia of three frog species thought to be entirely new to science, they sought traces of another amphibian that has not been seen in years.

The scientists, who worked the regions of Antioquia and Chocó found "a mysterious toad with ruby eyes, an aquiline nose, tiny toad that lies among dead leaves, and a beautiful new rocket frog with red flashes on their rumps" Proaves Foundation said, one that participated in the expedition.

"The three species were found during the day, when they were active, a behavior that scientists consider to be unusual for most amphibians," said Proaves.

José Vicente Rodríguez, an expert with Conservation International, told AFP: "the kind we were looking for was not found, but they got other animals."

"We are in the process of study and preliminary examination to verify that they are fully new, but there are serious approaches in that sense," he added.

The research team sought nosed toad species of Mesopotamia (Rhinella rostrata), which has not been seen since the time of the First World War.

Colombia, a country located mainly in the tropical mountains, boasts of being one of the most biodiverse in the world.

Terribilis Phyllobates, the golden frog poison dart frog or golden poison dart frog is endemic to the Colombian Pacific coast. This amphibian of the family Dendrobatidae is currently considered the most poisonous vertebrate in the world. Its habitat is the rainforests of Chocó and the Caribbean coast of Colombia. The optimal habitat of P. terribilis rainforests are high rain rate (5 m or more), and an altitude between 100-200 m, temperatures of at least 26 ° C and a relative humidity of 80-90%.

POISON

The average dose taken can vary between locations and consequently the local but the average diet of P. terribilis wild is estimated at (1) one milligram of poison, enough to kill about 10,000 mice. This estimate may vary, but most agree that this dose is sufficient to kill between 10 and 20 humans, which is equivalent to 2 African elephants. This is about human 15.000 per gram, making it one of the most potent poisons in the animal kingdom.

This extraordinarily lethal poison is very rare. The Batraciotoxina is only found in three poisonous frogs of Colombia (genus Phyllobates) and three birds of Papua New Guinea poisonous, pitohui dichrous, pitohui kowaldi kirhocephalus and Ifrit. Other related toxins are Histrionicotoxina and Pumiliotoxina, which are found in species of frogs of the genus Dendrobates.

The poison dart frogs and indigenous people

 P. terribilis frog is a very important local indigenous cultures, such as the Embera Choco people in the Colombian rain forest. The frog is the main source of poison darts used by the natives to hunt their food.

The Embera peoplecarefully lays out the frog by the fire, and this small amount of fluid exuding poisonous.

The tip of the arrows and darts are soaked in the fluid, and maintain their deadly effect for about two years.

Another species discovered in recent years is the Ranitomeya doriswansoni, which is poisonous as well discovered in the Central Cordillera of our country exactly in the month of July 2006 was his discovery. This species shows features such as black and red and has the fifth finger of his tiny feet.

We are preparing the project to share with you, hope you enjoy it and interest.

Colombia ranks second in the number of frogs world after Brazil, the country has about 700 species.

2008 was declared the International Year of the Frog and, therefore, the Ministry of Environment, Conservation International, the University of the Andes, the company Cerrejón of La Guajira and Cali Zoo, held a special exhibition of these amphibians Colombian the framework of the International Environmental Fair.
